  1. A submarine is an underwater warship. The 
  2. first underwater boat was constructed for 
  3. James (I) of England by the Dutch scientist 
  4. Cornelius van Drebbel (1572-1633) in 1620. A 
  5. naval submarine, or submersible torpedo boat, 
  6. the Gymnote, was launched by France 1888. The 
  7. conventional submarine of World War I was 
  8. driven by diesel engine on the surface and by 
  9. battery-powered electric motors underwater. 
  10. The diesel engine also drove a generator that 
  11. produced electricity to charge the batteries.
